CULRC are off to China

CULRC have been invited to an exhibition regatta along with Oxford, Havard and Yale Lightweight crews.
They will be traveling to China at the end of the month and will be competing in Beijing and Xingjing.

Henley Royal Regatta

Yesterday CULRC lined up against Eton in the first round of the Temple Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta.

CULRC vs Eton

The weather was clear and hot, and the wind, which had been changeable through out the day, had swung to the south making it a moderate headwind.

Both crews started well striking in the high 40s. Coming off the end of the island Eton made their extra 3 ½ stone per man count into the headwind and put in an early push to take a ½ length lead by the barrier.

Lightweight Mens Boat Race 2010

Cambridge made it two wins in a row in this years Lightweight Boat race.

Both crews had shown good speed in warm up fixtures against crews from London RC, Goldie, Leander, UL and Bristol University, and looked sharp in the build up to the race. Oxford won the toss and chose the Berks station with the better of the strong stream conditions.

Alumni Race and Dinner

There are 2 events looming large in the CULRC Alumni calendar. The Alumni Race and the Alumni Dinner on Feb 27th

We would like to see you involved in both events, the racing if you think you're up to it, or even if you're not and the dinner should be a great event with many already confirmed.

Trial VIII's

The 2009 CULRC Trial VIII’s Race produced a hard fought battle between the two crews “Maverick” and “Iceman”. Just like in Top Gun, the rivalry between the crews was fierce in training with each crew seeking to out-do the other in practice pieces. Also like the film, Iceman came out the victor, winning the race by a margin of 1 length.

CULRC has our own FLICKR account containing photos from recent events that we have raced at. Please check back regularly to see new material after each event we compete in.

We would also be delighted to host photos from previous years and events that CULRC has raced at, please contact the Vice-President Toby Parnell at tp272[at]cam.ac.uk.

Fairbairn Cup

CULRC had their best ever row in the Fairbairn Cup. They covered the course in a very quick 13.29 and were 15 secs off the two matched CUBC Trial Eights which finished within 1 second of each other.

The Fairbairn Cup is one of the largest races that the CULRC races in during the Michaelmas Term occurring just after the end of full term. It presents an excellent opportunity to produce a strong performance in front of home crowds on the Cam and there is always much appreciated support from the banks.

Winter Head

Cambridge Winter Head is the first chance the squad has to run ranked VIII’s for the first time each season and is used to assess potential crews for the Fairbairn Cup. This year the event fell just a week after the Fours Head of the River Race giving less preparation time than usual.

Fours Head of the River

Following the results from the Boston Trial, a quad of (stroke to bow) John Hale, Al Chappelle, Iain Rist and Chris Kerr was selected to race in LM4x at 4’s Head of the River. Sadly the event was cancelled at the last minute as we were waiting to boat from our generous host club Crabtree.

GB Trials Round 1

This year the CULRC are fortunate to have a strong squad of scullers and will be sending 7 athletes to GB trials: Charlie Pitt-Ford (initially rowing as Leander), John Hale, Chris Kerr, Iain Rist, Al Chappelle, Giles Dakin-White and Josh Wedlake. Pick of the performances goes to Charlie finishing a strong 10th in the Sculling trial, full results here..
